Granular Salt for Water Softeners
Granular salt is used in domestic water softeners that operate through an ion exchange process where resin beads inside the water softener attract and trap the calcium and magnesium ions in exchange for sodium ions.
Over time, the resin beads become too saturated with calcium and magnesium ions and must be regenerated with granular salt.
During the regeneration cycle, the water softener flushes the resin beads with a concentrated sodium chloride (salt water) solution. This displaces the calcium and magnesium ions from the resin beads, effectively recharging them. The calcium and magnesium ions are then flushed out of the system with the excess salt water.
Granular salt is a great option for domestic water softening systems because it is easy to store and handle. Remember, it’s essential to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for the type and amount of salt to use in your specific water-softening system.
